Cheryl Hrudka
overview
I have always been interested in Abstracts. These forms allow the viewer to question, and decide for themselves, my artistic intention. In other words, my images now pose more questions than answers. My primary subject matter lies in the eyes of the beholder. Each viewer brings his or her own psychological insight to the subsequent interpretation. While trying to challenge, the viewer’s conclusions are never threatened, but are respected and allowed to prosper. These images are at once geometric and bimorphic. In their mutability, they mimic our dreams, they mimic our lives.
I have found that architectural details, encapsulated and transformed, work better than other genres. However, there are no rules. The simplest of images are the starting point of my creative process. I focus on the journey. There are no maps. While at times I have an idea where I am going with an image, I truly do not know the end result until I get there.
about the artist
Before making photography a profession, Cheryl worked in various healthcare settings in the Midwest. Her personal experiences and her knowledge of the medical field contributed to her interest in using her photography to enhance the surroundings of others and add positively to their daily routines. Her photographs can be seen in hospitals, healthcare settings, corporate offices, and in private collections throughout the US and Canada.
Although Cheryl continues to take traditional photographs, she also pursues her own vision of the world. She really enjoys going down the road less traveled. “I have always been interested in Abstracts. It is a form of art in which the viewer makes up his / her own mind as to what the artist was attempting to render. In other words, my images now ask more questions than they answer.
It is this, my love of trying to create something totally unique that has led me to my latest images. When I take one of my previous representational photographs and start manipulating it on the computer I find that it is my instinct that really takes over in the creative process. Sometimes the result takes a few days, but most of the time the majority of the images have taken weeks or months to find their final form.”
artist statement
The computer has allowed me numerous possibilities which I have fully embraced. Like spoken words, it is the inflection of how that word is said that creates limitless endings. One can control a computer and one’s inflection ‘sort of’. I don’t believe that anyone can be an expert of inflection. The degree to which one masters the ‘sort of’ is the degree to which one is successful. Inflection is the key.
