Stan Johnson
overview
“You are what people say you are.”
I had my “let be” moment quite some time ago. Should people think of me as an “artist”, I am flattered. (All compliments are graciously accepted.) That said, I cannot afford to apply this term to myself. An “artist” bears the onus of persona. His or her life becomes a rarefied form of performance. The effort impairs output. Some of us do not need center stage. I think of myself as a technician offering a product. No more, no less. You will judge the quality of the product. This is as it should be. With any luck, the product will outlive the persona. As an optimist, I prefer to think it will. Can we live our lives in another manner?

about the artist
I was born in Winnetka, Illinois in 1949 and graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1971. My early life experience has little to do with what I became, except to say I was taught to use a camera and was afforded the luxury of seeing and thinking for myself. This is no small point. For the past thirty-some odd years, I have been in and out of the arts. The positions and/or activities which have a direct bearing on my work will be listed discursively, without regard to their relative importance.
- Preparator, Photo Collection, Art Institute of Chicago
- Lab Technician, Phototronics, Inc.
- Volunteer, Phoenix Art Museum
- Co-founder, with Cheryl Hrudka, of Recent Developments, LLC (a fine arts photographic concern)
- Associate member and former chairman of The Art Advisory Board of the University of Arizona
This list is far too short to be truly boring.
