overview

A lot of my work is produced directly from nature. This expresses my curiosity and interest in the world around us. I feel that nature can provide me with a continuous supply of visual stimulus with its infinite variety of colour and light.

My subject matter is mainly dependent on my surroundings rather than relying heavily on reference photos. I suppose that it could be said that my portfolio tells a story of my life, the places I have been, seen and experienced.

As well as being concerned with formal elements in creating a work such as line, shape, colour and structure, I am also concerned with deep human issues such as life, death, creation and love to name some. Most of the time these issues are subtle and underlying in the picture composition.

about the artist

I am an English Artist currently working in my home County of South Yorkshire in the North of England. I attended Canterbury Christ Church University to study a Degree in Painting and achieved a First Class Degree. I then went on to study at the prestigious Art School in London, ‘The Prince’s Drawing School’ where I achieved a Masters in drawing and also won the sort after scholarship, ‘The Richard Ford Award for Drawing’. The award allowed me to travel to Madrid for one month to study the collection at the Prado Museum.

As can be seen from browsing my portfolio, a lot of my work is produced directly from nature.

I am prolific in output of Art Work, always trying to act on inspiration before it dies away. I have an intense sense of time passing which I think also plays a role in the speed at which I paint. My painting is direct, both intuitive and controlled and unconcerned with creating a highly polished finish. I strive to capture simply and quickly my feelings and the varying sensations set before me when at my easel in the field, standing in the urban landscape and even in the harbour of Scarborough in the North East of England.

Van Gogh once said that the only time he felt alive was when he was painting, this is also true for me.
