overview

Flynn Geissel is a Washington DC-based artist whose atmospheric landscapes and two-dimensional floral constructions compel the viewer to confront nature on her terms.

A tour of the portfolio is a visual cascade, enveloping the viewer in enormous flowers, sunlit meadows, and frozen waterfalls of color. The series of works is inspired by the movement of water, the power of storm clouds, and the delicate form of flowers. The curator of Flow Art space has described Flynn’s work as “stunning.”

“My work is an homage to the feeling of reunion and cleansing we receive from nature. It affirms the power of nature to change us, to make us better.”

about the artist

Flynn Geissel is a Washington DC-based artist who creates atmospheric landscapes and two-dimensional floral constructions that compel the viewer to confront nature on her own terms. An artist of note, Flynn has been exhibited in two American museums - The Corcoran Gallery of Art and the San Diego Museum of the Living Artist.

An internationally exhibited artist, Flynn began her art career in the unlikely profession of psychology. Serving two masters, the artist studied painting and psychology, completing a doctoral degree in counseling psychology. Discovering a wealth of artistic material in the study of dreams, the unconscious, and the healing stories of many cultures, the artist moved further into art as a life calling. Flynn’s work has been exhibited in London UK and regularly on the New York art scene in galleries such as NAWA Gallery and The Jeffrey Leder Gallery. The artist is a regular part of juried shows throughout the nation including profit and non-profit spaces such as Hilton Head Island, university galleries, The Maryland Federation of Art, and the L.A. Center for Digital Art. An award winning artist, the portfolio landed the artist a finalist position in the 2012 Essie Awards. The curator of Flow Art space has described Flynn’s work as “stunning.”

A tour of the portfolio is a visual cascade, enveloping the viewer in enormous flowers, sunlit meadows, and frozen waterfalls of color. The series of works is inspired by the movement of water, the power of storm clouds, and the delicate form of flowers. In fact, the sheer size of the works allows the viewer to experience organic textures in new and surprising ways. Layers of thick paint are combined with light washes of color, almost using oil paint as a transparent watercolor medium. In the Floral portfolio, the artist explores new artistic methods of combining digitally manipulated photographs with layers of oil paint. In both landscapes and florals, there is a feeling of hidden forces, of something just out of reach. This quality makes us lean into the work as we feel that each piece may reveal a dark and beautiful truth. In all of the work, light seems to emerge triumphantly from a ground of darkness, conveying a feeling of victory and inspiration. This portfolio makes the viewer directly confront their internal relationship with the power of nature.

“My work is an homage to the feeling of reunion and cleansing we receive from nature. It affirms the power of nature to change us, to make us better.”
