Rachel Uchizono

overview
I am a California native, however I spent most of my childhood in Ithaca, New York. The varied landscapes and seasonal changes of the Northeast inspired my love for the outdoors. Eleven years ago I had an epiphany and started painting with oils. Living in Laguna Beach, historically the artist colony producing an amazing legacy of landscapes and seascapes in the Plein Air tradition, I was in the right place to discover the joy of painting on location. I have taken a handful of workshops from local and visiting masters including Ray Roberts, Ken Auster, Mark Kerckhoff, Saim Caglayan and one fabulous day with Dan Pinkham. From the moment I picked up a brush I have had a distinctive style. When I paint I feel aggressive and fearless. The vision I wish to convey is distinct and my need to express this vision is what drives me to paint. The only way to learn is to “push the paint around.” Oil painting feels like an endless challenge. The more I paint the more I see.
